![]() There never seemed to be any options between these two if the female was the lead of the fantasy, dark fantasy, or even a horror novel. ![]() Or maybe you aren’t sure there is a “right” answer, or you are afraid and take longer to work up to confront those fears. ![]() There seemed to be no grayness, no authenticity to other options – like if you mess up or panic and have to work your way back to prove yours. Or you were the anti-heroine, where you were so good-looking that everyone fell over themselves to justify your actions and explain how they really had a good reason. If you were the heroine, you were most likely super quick to make the best decisions, with no hesitation in doing the right thing and taking up the sword for justice. Beyond that, I went back to the feelings of my childhood and teenage years of reading fantasy and felt like I couldn’t identify with most of the female characters in the novels. ![]() ![]() Here are eight Westerns… kidding! Here are eight novels of historical fiction set in the Northwest that do just that: Washington: Sarah Canary by Karen Joy Fowler I like the surprise of it, and the thought of people buying the book assuming it is about rugged men on the range with their guns and instead getting a future-seeing woman in a city, armed only with her considerable wits. I like calling the story a feminist Western, an urban Western, a magical Western. ![]() But, because it is a novel set in a certain time: The Past. There are some cigarettes, though no firearms. To me, the genre of Western was something different-stories of cowboys riding horses and smoking cigarettes and shooting guns. ![]() In the five years I spent working on Fire Season, I always just called it historical fiction. ![]() I did not realize I had written a Western until I learned my novel was going to be marketed as such. ![]() ![]() ![]()

In addition to the deaths, eight people have reported vision loss and four have had their eyeballs surgically removed (enucleation).
